Investment in our Network

Anglesey

The completion of Parc Cybi substation has significantly improved the reliability of the 33kv network on Holyhead. This major project is now complete and will improve the electricity supplies in Anglesey. The electricity infrastructure on the island was running at almost full capacity, meaning that any further major business development was limited. However, increased capacity in the electricity network through the commission of new reinforcement circuits on the island will allow businesses such as Parc Cybi development site to expand further and potentially create more jobs.

Ian Barraclough, project manager said: "As a part of this major project we have installed a bespoke aluminium cabling bridge, attached to the A55 Anglesey causeway. This carries the cable over a seawater inlet which is built into the causeway itself.”

“We looked at the best solution to provide Anglesey with more power for the future and which will help encourage inward investment to the island. We also looked for the most environmentally sustainable solution to providing more power.”

“Already it has shown the improvement in the reliability of the supply to the Island when the day after the substation was commissioned in August, there was an unknown earth fault on the Llaingoch feeder, which would have caused loss of supply to half of Holyhead, however the new DAR protection scheme successfully reclosed the circuit within 4 seconds restoring supplies to the area.”

The scheme is unique and threw up some interesting challenges which were overcome by working closely with local environmental experts, our supply partners and the Welsh Assembly.
